The Alfa Romeo Entry
Car 39 Addison Motors, Australia, Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina, S. McLeod
The Marathon's sole Alfa Romeo, entered by Addison Motors, Australia, blew a gearbox near Tehran, and was forced to retire.

On board the Chusan, Adelaide driver of the Alfa Romeo, Stewart McLeod, spent nine days trying to sell his comprehensive route notes of the Australian section to overseas competitors. Unable to raise the £stg1000 asking price, he finally gave them away to friends.

Footnote:
Several drivers stormed into Port Autusta to find South Australian champion Stewart McLeod lamenting that his secret road through the Flinders Ranges had been discovered.

McLeod flew to South Australia and surveyed the road again for friends - and found it as busy as Pitt Street (a main street in central Sydney). "There are three ways of getting to Moralana Creek," he said. "One road will make anybody hopelessly late, another can be cleaned, but only just, and anyone who uses my road will be in with time to spare.

Before I left for London, I drummed up a few mates of mine and they got the local council to grade 15 miles of road especially for me. I thought it was a closely kept secret - and I was certain this would give me a winning advantage in the Flinders Ranges.

When I pulled out, I gave a few mates of mine, including Barry Ferguson the word - and they were delighted. I took straight off for the Flinders when I arrived back in Adelaide - and found the secret route covered with service vehicles and people doing last minute surveys for other teams. I don't know how I'm going to tell the other blokes."
