The Chrysler Valiant Estate
Car 5 R. Lewis, Gt. Britain, Chrysler Valiant Estate. Driver P. Lumsden
The four man crew comprising P. Lumsden, P.J. Sargent, R. Lewis and J. Fenton of car no. 5, a privately entered Chrysler Valiant Estate (station wagon), learned, an hour after leaving Istanbul how the Turkish truck "jockies" who are forgetful about other traffic on the open road were. The Chrysler was sideswiped by a truck, its left door snapped off and the chassis a write off. Luckily the crew was not hurt.

The Turkish truck drivers gave Marathon cars many a close call. On the 550 mile run to Sivas, truck drivers frightened the life out of veteran rally men by passing on crests without a thought for possible oncoming traffic. Wrecks scattered along the road told they were not always lucky in these jousts with destruction.
