Martin Maudling, 24 year old son of the deputy leader of the British Conservative Party, had a special reason for taking a place in the crew of a Marathon car. His fiancee, an Australian girl, Wendy Dotch, 20, was waiting for him in Sydney.

Soon after he arrived in Supersport Engines Ltd's Ford Escort car no. 78, they married.

Maudling, a keen driver, started racing with a XK120 Jaguar. His lead driver in the Escort was Jim Gavin, drag racing and autocross enthusiast; and John Maclay, who had a good season at Monza, Italy, in 1966.
