There was disappointing news for Ford Germany when, 500 miles out of Kabul, the Glemser-Braungart Ford 20 MRS broke a drive between the camshaft and distributor and was out.
Glemser telephoned the news that, for him, the Marathon was over.

Only 100 people were at Ceduna in South Australia when Lucien Bianchi arrived early, but when the news spread, crowds soon gathered. Staepelaere's Ford 20 MRS from Germany, was next in, followed by Harry Firth in the Australian Ford Falcon GT.

Gilbert Staepelaere nursed his second place Ford Taunus into Edi with the suspension shattered and the rear end not locating, dropping only two points...then was booked by an over-zealous policeman for doing 37 mph through Wangaratta late at night. The speed limit was 35 mph.
