Welcome to the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon

In 1968 a motoring phenomenon known as the London-Sydney Marathon, the first inter-continental rally was held.

The original........... and some say the best.

Acclaimed by many motoring enthusiasts as the Rally of the Twentieth Century, it was the brainchild of a team of editorial executives at the Daily Express in London in 1967.

Travelling through 11 countries from London, England to France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India then finally travelling across Australia to Sydney.

Many, many stories have been told of the first London-Sydney Marathon....this is just another one.

Re-live the excitement of this classic Marathon.

Travel with the drivers on rough dangerous roads, share their ecstacy and disappointments. Endear yourself to the camaraderie along with the many sacrifices they made.

Taste the dust, feel the emotions.

Get involved and meet these rally drivers - many were heroes and well known in their own countries.

Join in with the millions of on-lookers who assembled from far and near to watch this extraordinary car race.

Read about the planning and organising of this massive operation.

There are always many unsung heroes whose hard work behind the scenes, goes almost always, un-noticed. This site is a testament to their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication.

To the Service Control Project Co-ordinators, Team Members, the Media and everyone else, in any way involved - THANK YOU one and all for a job well done!

Looking through the eyes of the competitors, reporters and on-lookers, you will be inspired by the courage, tenacity and the endurance of these drivers and their cars.

Driving day and night, through snow and desert, on goat tracks and highways, through border crossings and over incredibly high mountain ranges.

This surely was THE MARATHON of the Twentieth Century.

Settle back and enjoy those golden years.
